Install WallpaperMachine
Updated September 27, 2026
WallpaperMachine is a free download for Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later) running macOS 15 Sequoia or later. It comes as a disk image from the project’s GitHub releases.
Install it
-
Download
WallpaperMachine-1.2.3-arm64.dmgfrom the latest release on GitHub and open it. - Drag WallpaperMachine onto the Applications folder in the window that opens.
- Open WallpaperMachine. The build is ad-hoc signed and not notarized, so macOS stops its first launch: open System Settings → Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway, and confirm.
Keep it in Applications
In-app updates replace a copy in /Applications or
~/Applications, and nowhere else. Launch at login also
waits until the app is in Applications. Settings → About shows what
changed in the newest release.
The first-run guide
The first time WallpaperMachine opens, a guide fills the window. It has five pages, and every choice can be changed later in Settings:
- Language & appearance: System, English or Simplified Chinese; System, Light or Dark.
- Steam: browsing is free, and downloading needs a Steam account that owns Wallpaper Engine. Sign in now (Install SteamCMD and sign in, if SteamCMD isn’t there yet) or Skip for now.
- Preferences: Launch at login, Pause on battery, Reduced quality on battery, Keep windows in place when clicking the wallpaper, and the experimental Animate lock screen.
- Tips: how Discover, downloads and displays work, and what to expect from compatibility.
- Start: Browse the Workshop, Import wallpapers, or Start using the app.
The guide shows once. Settings → Library & Steam → Welcome guide → Show again brings it back.
Check the download
Each release carries a checksum file beside the disk image. With both in the same folder, run this in Terminal there:
shasum -a 256 -c WallpaperMachine-1.2.3-arm64.dmg.sha256
It prints OK after the file name when the disk image is intact.
Or build it from the source
The complete source is on
GitHub
under the GPL-2.0 license. It builds on a Mac with Apple silicon and
Xcode 26 (macOS 15.6 or later), with a full Xcode selected with xcode-select
and the Homebrew packages listed in the
build guide:
python3 scripts/install_ffmpeg.py
python3 scripts/build.py --configuration Release
The app lands in
build/Build/Products/Release/WallpaperMachine.app. Scene
wallpapers still need the shared resources from a Wallpaper Engine you
own.
Common questions
Why does macOS stop the first launch?
The download is ad-hoc signed and not notarized by Apple, so Gatekeeper holds its first launch. Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security lets it open.
How does it update?
In-app updates come from the project’s GitHub releases and replace the
copy in /Applications or ~/Applications; a
copy anywhere else isn’t updated.
