Steam Workshop on a Mac
Updated September 27, 2026
WallpaperMachine’s Discover tab is the live Steam Workshop for Wallpaper Engine. Browsing needs no sign-in. Downloading needs a Steam account that owns Wallpaper Engine, and happens inside the app through SteamCMD, Valve’s command-line download tool: no Steam app and no Windows PC.
Browse Discover
Search, or sort by Most popular this year (where Discover opens), Highest rated, Most popular today, Trending this week, Most popular this month, Most subscribed, Newest or Relevance. Each page holds 30 wallpapers, and Steam lets a search reach 1,000 pages.
Filter, in the toolbar, opens a sidebar that mirrors Wallpaper Engine’s own, box for box:
- Show only: Approved, Audio responsive, Customizable.
- Type: Scene, Video, Web; Wallpaper, Preset.
- Age rating: Everyone, Questionable, Mature. Only Everyone is ticked at first.
- Resolution, from 1280 × 720 to triple-monitor and portrait sizes.
- Tags, from Abstract to Vehicle.
You can try Discover before installing anything: the home page runs it on the live Workshop.
Download a wallpaper
- Double-click a tile, or choose Download in the inspector. The tile’s ring names each step, such as Connecting or Signing in, then shows the percentage, and reads Finishing while the files are checked.
- Downloads queue up: three run at once by default, and Settings → Library & Steam → Downloads at once chooses from 1 to 6. The queue opens from the activity bar at the bottom of the window.
- A download never subscribes you on Steam and never applies on its own. Once it’s in your library, double-click it, or press Apply wallpaper.
The first download: SteamCMD and Steam sign-in
The first download asks only for what it still needs, and remembers it:
- Install SteamCMD. One click installs Valve’s tool once its signature checks pass. Installing it doesn’t sign you in.
- Enter your Steam account name, the login name rather than your profile name, and then your password when Steam asks for it.
- Answer Steam Guard: approve the sign-in in the Steam mobile app (if it asks where you’re signing in, choose Steam Client), or type the code from your authenticator or email.
Keep me signed in on this Mac is on by default, so the next download starts without a prompt. Passwords and Steam Guard codes are never saved; only the sign-in Steam issues is kept, for that one account. Log out… in Settings → Library & Steam removes it.
You can also sign in ahead of time on the first-run guide’s Steam page.
Shared resources for scene wallpapers
Scene wallpapers need shaders and materials from a Wallpaper Engine you bought; video wallpapers don’t. The first scene download asks where to get them:
- Download from Steam needs a Steam account that owns Wallpaper Engine and several gigabytes free while it downloads. Steam downloads the Windows build into temporary storage; the app keeps only the shared resources, and no Windows program ever runs.
- Use an existing installation points at the folder of a Wallpaper Engine you already have, and nothing downloads.
You can set this up later too, in Settings → Library & Steam or with Get shared resources in a scene’s details. A wallpaper you already downloaded then applies without downloading it again.
Bring the wallpapers you already have
Import, in the Installed toolbar, copies Wallpaper Engine folders you already have into the library and leaves the originals alone. When a wallpaper is already there, choose Skip duplicates or Keep both copies.
Common questions
Do I need the Steam app on my Mac?
No. Browsing needs nothing from Steam, and downloads run through SteamCMD inside WallpaperMachine.
Does downloading subscribe me to the wallpaper on Steam?
No. Downloads never subscribe on Steam, and they never apply on their own.
Is my Steam password saved?
No. Passwords and Steam Guard codes are never saved. With Keep me signed in on this Mac, the app keeps only the sign-in Steam issues, for one account, and Log out… removes it.
